Anubias Barteri var. Nana – Dwarf Anubias

Anubias Barteri var. Nana, or Anubias Nana for short, originated from Africa, particularly from Cameroon. This plant is very hardy since it can tolerate a wide variety of aquarium conditions. It is virtually hard to kill in an aquarium.

As Anubias Nana is classified as a low-light plant, it is best to keep this species under shaded areas, such as under driftwood or other taller plants. Direct lighting, especially intense high lighting, will cause the leaves of this plant to be prone to green spot algae.

Carbon Dioxide injection is not necessary for this species, as it will grow with or without CO2. Fertilization is also not very essential since it is a slow-growing species.

Anubias Nana is best used as a midground plant or as an epiphyte growing on rocks or driftwoods. This plant can absorb nutrients from the water column directly. When planting Anubias Nana on the substrate, be very careful not to bury the rhizome, which looks similar to a big stem, as the rhizome will rot if buried.

Anubias Nana, as with all other Anubias species, has two root types if examined physically. One is the hard root, which is used to anchor the plant to solid objects. If tied to a driftwood or rock, this hard root will anchor to the surfaces of the rock or wood. The other root is soft and hairy. This root is used by the plant to absorb essential nutrients from the water column or the substrate. It is fine to bury these two roots into the substrate.
